9. Reference my No. 4.⁴ De Valera’s protest made against Maffey’s advice is probably inspired by left wing pressure and local political considerations. Few Irishmen realize the probable reaction of the American public to a protest against American troops coming overseas to fight their battle. Unless instructed by you to the contrary I intend to officially ignore the episode.
