446. Inspector General of Customs has communicated to British and French Ambassadors and to me copy of a telegram from Commissioner of Customs at Tientsin reporting that he is informed that further tariff revision will come into force probably on May 1st and that local press indicates that the revision will include measures designed to promote trade and industry, reduction in export duties, lifting of prohibition on export of some products and some changes to encourage export trade for improvement of international receipts and payments for stabilization of new currency, stimulation of closer [Page 671] economic contact between China, Japan and Manchukuo, a “simultaneous readjustment of customs structure to simplify customs procedure”.
Repeated to Tokyo, Hankow, and Peiping.
