The Chargé in China (Peck) to the Secretary of State
[Received December 25—11:35 a.m.]
620. Embassy’s 613, December 23, 9 a.m. The First Secretary of the British Embassy informed me December 24, 9 p.m., that Donald had informed him that Chiang Kai Shek wished to state to the British [Page 436] and American Governments that nothing Wang Ching Wei might do or say represented the Chinese Government in any way. Being unable to reach me quickly Donald asked the British Secretary to transmit this message to me for the Department.
The Embassy is reliably informed that General Chiang returned to Chungking on the afternoon of December 24 from his trip of inspection in the northwest.
Repeated to Peiping for Tokyo.
