The Chargé in the United Kingdom (Johnson) to the Secretary of State
[Received August 12—2:35 p.m.]
756. My 748, August 11, 7 p.m. The Foreign Office informs me that an acknowledgment has been received from Ambassador Craigie who intends to discuss the matter with Mr. Grew on Monday. The Ambassador says that he considers secrecy to be of the utmost importance if there is to be any chance of success in this endeavor and suggests that he consult with his French colleague as well as with the German Ambassador. To this the Foreign Office will make no objection. Accordingly the French Government will be informed in confidence of the Chinese proposal to the British and of the instructions to Ambassador Craigie.
