The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in Japan (Grew)

5. Your 17, January 10, 2 p.m.

1.
Recently the British Embassy here brought to the attention of the Department information which had been communicated to the British Government to the effect that an agreement had allegedly been signed at Washington for a loan to China of 150 million dollars. The Department informed the British Embassy that there is no foundation whatsoever for such a report in so far as the United States Government is concerned. The Department is not aware that any negotiations for a Chinese loan are taking place in this country.
2.
It is the Department’s understanding that during a recent call of the Chinese Ambassador on the President the President made no observations on the Japanese peace terms.
