224. For the President and the Secretary. While the Polish Government maintains secrecy regarding its intentions vis-à-vis Teschen District I am informed by a usually competent and informed source [Page 710] that Poland sent Praha what virtually amounts to ultimatum in response to this afternoon’s receipt of what Poland considers unsatisfactory reply from Praha. Informant adds if favorable reply to Poland’s terms is not received by midnight tonight the Government will make a “very important decision”. Situation is steadily growing from bad to worse.
