The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in China (Johnson)

217. Your 570, August 31, 2 p.m., and 604, September 5, 11 a.m.,4 paragraph 7. I have sent letters to the International Missionary Council and to the National Catholic Welfare Conference in regard to the evacuation of Americans from China. The letters were based upon and contained the general substance of the Department’s 206, September 2, 6 p.m. The organizations addressed were asked to communicate the contents of my letter to missions with which they maintained connections.

I sent similar letters to the Standard Vacuum Oil Company and The Texas Company.
