The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in the United Kingdom (Bingham)

331. Your 505, July 27, 1 p.m., first paragraph. The Department has been informed by our Embassy at Peiping that the Senior Commandant at no time received from a Japanese liaison officer information such as is reported in the paragraph under reference, and that according to information received from the British Embassy at Peiping that Embassy telegraphed London a corrected version of that matter in a telegram despatched a few hours after the original message. It is assumed that you were not informed of the receipt by the British Foreign Office of the corrected version.

The Department suggests that you may care informally to bring the foregoing to the attention of the Foreign Office with comment that the action taken was, fortunately, entirely appropriate.
