The Ambassador in China (Johnson) to the Secretary of State

347. A Foreign Office spokesman confirms a Central News Agency report dated July 30th that Rear Admiral Honda, Japanese Naval Attaché, called yesterday on Chinese Minister of the Navy and a Vice Minister of War and gave warning that unfortunate incidents in Central and South China should be prevented. Honda said the Japanese naval authorities regretted the Sino-Japanese hostilities in the Peiping–Tientsin area and feared that present tension there would spread to other parts of China. In that case, he said, the Third Japanese Fleet would take arbitrary action.

Sent to the Department, Peiping, Tokyo, Hankow, Canton. By mail to Shanghai.
