The Ambassador in France (Bullitt) to the Secretary of State

43. This morning I had a conversation with Chautemps Minister of State on the subject of the Moroccan difficulty. He said that he felt [Page 229] Vienot22 had made a mistake in getting the French press so excited about the matter but added that he was glad that Hitler had been pushed into making his declaration to François-Poncet. He believed that the incident could be considered closed.
