5. Embassy’s 1, January 4, 5 p.m., American oil interests in Japan.

- The conversations between the special representatives of the American and British oil interests and the Japanese officials commenced yesterday at the Tokyo Club in order to avoid premature publicity in a pleasant and conciliatory atmosphere. The first day was devoted principally to generalities, the Japanese doing most of the talking. Conversations will be resumed this afternoon.

- No Embassy officials are attending meetings but the oil interests will keep the Embassies fully informed. Important developments will be conveyed to the Department by telegraph and memoranda of the conversations by mail.
