893.6359 Antimony/18

The Minister in China (Johnson) to the Secretary of State

No. 3441

Sir: I have the honor to refer to this Legation’s telegram No. 86 of February 23, 12 noon,62 concerning the Hunan Antimony Syndicate, and to enclose herewith a copy of despatch L. No. 64 of March 8, 1935, from the Consul General at Hankow,62 transmitting additional information on the subject. The Department will note that the Consul General reports that the Syndicate is not now, so far as known, negotiating with any firm with regard to the granting of monopoly rights for the sale or export of antimony, and that the Syndicate is now in a weak financial position.

As of possible further interest, there is also enclosed herewith a copy of despatch No. L-637 Diplomatic of March 2, 1935, from Counselor Peck62 concerning the same subject. It may be observed that, despite the fact that Mr. Peck on March 2 urged Dr. S. S. Liu of the Department of European and American Affairs of the Foreign Office to take some action on the Legation’s note of February 11, no reply to that communication has yet been received. Mr. Peck is being directed to inquire again of the Foreign Office when a reply may be expected.

Respectfully yours,

Nelson Trusler Johnson
