5. Consul General Hankow reported on December 30 that some anxiety is felt concerning the safety of American Catholic missionaries at Chihkiang, Hunan Province, and that he had made representations to the Provincial Government. The following telegram has now been received from Josselyn:
“January 6, 3 p.m. Telegram received from Chihkiang by Catholic mission Hankow, January 3rd states. ‘All safe.’ Changsha press reports January 5th that Reds who threatened Chihkiang had moved into Kweichow by way of Hwanghsien and were near Tungjen, Kweichow, on January 3rd and that Reds in Suining district are moving past Tsinghsien towards Kweichow border.”
