The Counselor of Embassy in China (Lockhart) to the Secretary of State

110. Embassy’s 99, October 28, 4 p.m. Following telegram has been sent to the Consul General at Hankow by the Embassy:

“November 1, 9 a.m. Reverend C. F. Snyder, Christian and Missionary Alliance, who arrived in Peiping on October 28 with the missionary party from Lanchow, reports that the mission’s station at Minhsien, Kansu, has been occupied since the departure of the missionaries by Central Government troops and that the mission’s station at Taochow, Kansu, has been occupied by Provincial troops. He further reports that the mission’s church at Lintao, Kansu, has probably also been occupied by troops.

Please telegraph Chairman of the Kansu Provincial Government and request that the troops in occupation of these American mission stations be ordered to remove from the premises which will be cared for by the mission’s Chinese staff.

Counselor Peck at Nanking has been requested to make appropriate representations to the Foreign Office.”
