The Minister in China ( Johnson ) to the Secretary of State

83. Reference Legation’s 74, February 13, 1 p.m.,85 following telegram has been received from the Consul General at Hankow:

“February 19, 6 p.m. Reliable information Reds from northern Szechwan have crossed border into Shensi with the probable intent to proceed westward to Kansu and Sinkiang. Letters to China Inland Mission from Fenghsien, Shensi, dated February 13th, state that Ningkiang, Mienhsien and Lioyang in southwest Shensi taken by Reds. No Americans stationed at places. Have warned Americans Shensi, Kansu, Chinghai and Sinkiang by letter and also sent telegrams warning to Fenghsien, Shensi and Tienshui, Minhsien and Tsingshui, Kansu.”
