26. Reference Nanking’s No. 6 of January 17, noon, concerning Stam case. The following telegram has been sent to Peck.
“January 17, 8 p.m. Your January 17, noon. The Legation is skeptical of truth of this report, and will be interested to examine [Page 668] whatever proof may be offered by the Foreign Office to support it. Please avoid making any statement at the Foreign Office suggestive of acceptance of or satisfaction with any such report or statement.”
