The Chargé in China (Gauss) to the Secretary of State

51. Department’s 28, January 29, 7 p.m. The Military Attaché will leave February 1, 3 p.m. for Shanghai and Nanking and will orally convey sense of Department’s views to Chiang and to Kung, Minister of Finance, who was present [at] previous interview. He will also appropriately inform Jouett who would likely be the person through whom an effort might be made to find a successor. I am informing Peck fully, also sending memorandum for the information of Minister Johnson upon his arrival.33

  1. The Minister in China reported in his despatch No. 3371, February 18, 1935, that Lt. Col. Drysdale had carried out the Legation’s instructions in conversations with Kung and Jouett, but had been unable to see Chiang Kai-shek because of his absence (893.20/524).
