500.A15A4 General Committee (Arms)/357: Telegram

The Secretary of State to the American Delegate (Wilson)

497. Wilson’s telegram No. 295, June 28, 3 p.m. from London. I concur in your opinion that consideration of the British suggestion may well be deferred until after your return to Geneva.

In the meantime without desiring to commit ourselves definitely, you are informed, for your guidance, that we feel that it would be unwise for us to entertain any suggestions for compromise on the essential points which Stanhope and Stevenson have discussed with you until there is definite reason to believe that concessions on our part would result in a general acceptance of the Convention in the immediate future.
