The Chargé in Egypt ( Childs ) to the Secretary of State

93. In accordance with the instructions of his Government, Italian Minister yesterday made a verbal protest32 against the decision of the Egyptian Government in principle to apply sanctions against Italy. Italian Minister is reported to have stated by an official announcement of the Government of Egypt that the Italian Government reserved the right to take any action which might be deemed necessary against Egypt in the event of the violation of the latter’s international engagements with Italy.
