Circular Letter by the Secretary General of the League of Nations (Avenol)

No. C.L.111.1935.XII.

Russian, Armenian, Assyrian, Assyro-Chaldean and Turkish Refugees: Settlement of Such Refugees in Oversea Countries

The Secretary-General has the honour to draw the attention of the Government of the United States to the report of the Inter-Governmental Advisory Commission for Refugees on the work of its seventh session (document C.137.M.71.1935 XII) and to the report submitted to the Council (eighty-sixth session) on this subject by the representative of Mexico (document C.200.1935.XII). Acting upon the recommendations of the Inter-Governmental Advisory Commission, the Council of the League of Nations instructed the Secretary-General to inform the Governments of the countries concerned of the keen desire expressed by the Inter-Governmental Commission and the Assembly of the League—which made known its views on this subject at its fifteenth session—that the various Governments should communicate [Page 497] to the Nansen International Office information regarding the possibility of settling refugees in the territory of the United States.

The Secretary-General will duly transmit any information on this subject which he may receive from the Government of the United States to the Nansen International Office.
