The Ambassador in Chile (Sevier) to the Acting Secretary of State

No. 21

Sir: With reference to this Embassy’s despatch No. 1551 of October 3, 1933, concerning the application of the Chilean sales tax, I have the honor to transmit herewith a copy of a letter from The Chile Telephone Company,38 a subsidiary of the International Telephone & Telegraph Company, requesting information as to what decision has been made relative to the payment of the sales tax on telephone services rendered to this Embassy. It will be recalled that in the last paragraph of the despatch under reference, it was stated that the Embassy was declining to pay the tax pending further instructions from the Department. Accordingly, it would be appreciated if the Department would indicate by telegraph what action it desires to take with respect to the principle involved.

Respectfully yours,

Hal Sevier
