The Consul General at Hankow (Adams) to the Secretary of State

21. A considerable force of Communists from the Red Lake area attacked Government forces on the outskirts of Hanyang yesterday. The five American residents of Hanyang have evacuated to Hankow.

Last night at Hankow firing could be heard and the situation was critical because of the refusal of some of the Government troops to fight the Communists. Reenforcements were hurriedly brought to the scene of action and the situation this morning appears to be easier. The Chinese authorities claimed an hour ago that the Communists had been repulsed to a safe distance from Wuhan.
