The Consul General at Shanghai (Cunningham) to the Secretary of State

123. Continuing my daily report 113, February 26, 4 p.m.

1.
There is little change to report. Japanese military have devoted most of their time to reconnaissance and bombing work with planes. Some 40 planes are said to be in the air at once each plane remaining 1 hour. They claim to have destroyed approximately 10 Chinese planes at Hangchow in yesterday’s raid. In addition to the raid at Hangchow they also machine-gunned a supplemental field at Soochow. In their activities in and around the Settlement the American marines report that 3 Japanese pursuit planes flew over the Settlement outside billet number 12.
2.
A later report is to the effect that the Japanese have been bombing a fort near Paoshan Village. The Japanese now report that they have completely enveloped Kiangwan Village making it impossible for the Chinese defenders to hold out much longer. They also claim to have straightened their lines opposite Tazang Village.

Repeated to the Legation and Nanking. Copy to Minister.
