The Chargé in Chile (Norweb) to the Secretary of State

Sir: I have the honor to refer to this Embassy’s despatch No. 819 of March 27, 1931,25 with special reference to enclosure No. 6, and to report that the Chilean Supreme Court, on April 21st, and by a vote of four to one, denied the appeal of Brusadelli y Manni from the decision of the Court of Appeals. By the latter decision, made on March 21, 1931, the Court of Appeals acted favorably on the appeal (similar to habeas corpus) presented by the attorneys for General Motors on behalf of Mr. Bethune, who was released and whose bond was cancelled.
This decision of the Supreme Court confirms the justice of the Embassy’s protest against the illegality of the arrest of Mr. Bethune and of his being held incomunicado.
