The Minister in Austria (Stockton) to the Secretary of State

[Paraphrase]

122. I have been urging the Austrian Government to permit the showing of the film “All Quiet on the Western Front” in Austria since the exhibition of the film has been allowed in Germany. In spite of the determined opposition of the Minister of the Interior, Winkler, the question was at last brought before a ministerial council on November 3. In view of the present unrest in Austria, especially among the National Socialists, it was decided not to remove the ban on the film for the present as disturbances might follow. I was informed by the Foreign Office, however, that this decision was not meant to suggest that the picture might not be released at some time in the future.
