Memorandum of a Conversation

The Japanese Ambassador called at his request and after having taken up with the Secretary other matters which are dealt with in a separate memorandum stated that he had communicated to his Government yesterday the Secretary’s reply to the Japanese Government’s proposals and the Japanese Government had informed the Ambassador that it was now preparing a statement for public release. The Ambassador said that he hoped to receive a copy of the statement in advance of publication so that he could lay it before the Secretary.

The Secretary made no comment.
