17. My 16, March 31, 4 p.m.80 The following to the Legation:
“April 2, 3 p.m. My January [March] 31, 1 [3] p.m. China Inland Mission here received the following telegram today from Changsha throwing further light on bandit raid on Yuanchow:
‘Miss Gemmell, Mr. and Mrs. Porteous abducted by brigands and held for ransom $20,000 each. Miss Rugg and Mr. and Mrs. Glazier81 are hiding in the district.’
Repeated to Department and Nanking.”
