667. Legation’s 659, August 3, 11 a.m.73 Following from Palos at Changsha, August 4th:
“Informed reliably about five thousand Ho Chien troops at Yolanshan west of west side of island. Also few Communists remaining Changsha. Appears Ho Chien and Fifty-third Division, that apparently armed in part, may make effort retake Changsha today or tomorrow. Learned all Communists evacuated city when Palos forced to return fire the other day and only handful returned. Have received contact information of Ho Chien army. Will remain opposite Socony till city safe to return, avoiding take any part recapture city, moral or otherwise.”
