August 3, 3 p.m. Communists still hold Changsha although main body has apparently moved east toward Liuyang.
Very strict martial law in Wuhan, all traffic prohibited midnight to dawn.
Foreign naval vessels in Hankow: British, one gunboat; French, [Page 161] three gunboats; Japanese, one cruiser, three gunboats; American, one gunboat. Italian gunboat will arrive tomorrow.
On July 31st, through Monocacy at Kiukiang, I warned Americans to withdraw from Kuling at once.
Jordan,72 who resigned effective August 3, will remain for a week or 10 days at Nanking.”
