The Consul General at Hankow (Lockhart) to the Minister in China (Johnson)37

No. 985

Sir: I have the honor to enclose a copy of a communication that has been received from the Reverend Peter Valder36 of the Lutheran Brethren Mission at Tsaoyang, Hupeh, giving the details of an attack upon the mission at that place by troops endeavoring to find quarters.

It will be noted that the proclamations issued by the National Government to protect the mission property from just such incidents were completely ignored, and that the lives of the missionaries were [Page 133] endangered by the determination of the troops to occupy the mission premises.

I have taken this matter up with General Ho Ying-chin in an endeavor to prevent a recurrence of such incidents and to obtain the punishment of the officer responsible for the attack.

I have [etc.]
