The Secretary of State to the Ambassador in France (Edge)

[Paraphrase]

430. Your telegram No. 581, December 26, 11 a.m. I think procedure you have followed has been very satisfactory. I do not think that it would be wise to send Tardieu a note, but I hope that you and Gibson will assure him that President Hoover and I are most pleased [Page 315] over assurances which you have communicated regarding his firm intention of bringing the London Conference to successful conclusion, You may also inform him that I have had in mind at all times the various naval needs of the five powers attending the Conference.

Before the formal opening of the Conference, I hope to have the opportunity of conferring with Tardieu.
