The Secretary of State to the Chargé in China (Mayer)

130. Tokyo’s No. 118 July 1, 4 P.M. to the Department.87

With reference to MacMurray’s88 informal conversation with Shidehara. Department notes MacMurray’s opinion that it would be better if the extraterritorial commission were convened at a fixed date after the completion of the work of the economic conference. The Department does not agree that this commission should wait upon the completion of the work of the economic conference. This Government is ready to proceed with that commission at the earliest date that can be fixed. You will bring this to the attention of MacMurray.
