Department’s 282, August 31, 8 p.m. was read to Foreign Office whereupon Embassy was informally advised that British Chargé d’Affaires at Peking would be instructed to cooperate with his American colleague: First, in arranging McEuen’s immediate suspension; second, in endeavoring to obtain as satisfactory assurances as possible that McEuen will be retired in the event of his vindication; and third, in expediting the holding of the judicial inquiry.
