The Under Secretary of State (Fletcher) to the Secretary of the Navy (Denby)

Sir: With reference to my letter to you of December 19,58 and to your reply thereto under date of December 23,58 regarding the withdrawal of the marine garrison at Camaguey, Cuba, I beg to advise you that the Department of State is now informed by General Crowder that he is satisfied that local conditions no longer require the retention of this American garrison at Camaguey, and that adequate provision has been made for the protection of American property in that vicinity. I beg to request, therefore, that instructions may be issued in order that the withdrawal of the marine garrison from Camaguey may take effect without delay.
