The Minister in China (Schurman) to the Secretary of State

193. Fengtien forces have evacuated Changhsintien position on the Peking–Hankow Railway and are now retreating on Fengtai closely followed by Chihli troops. Fengtien stragglers have appeared at west gates of Peking but gates closed against them. Other city gates now closed also. An American with the Chihli side has telephoned from Changhsintien that the Chihli troops have also prevailed at Kuan and Machang and are now within 20 miles of Tientsin of which however we have no confirmation.
