Mr. Terrell to Mr. Olney.

No. 708.]

Sir: I inclose copy of a note just received from Sir Philip Currie, British ambassador, informing me that the missionaries at Bitlis still regard their condition as critical, as he is informed through his consul at Erzerum.

Their condition now is a realization of my fears, expressed to your Department nearly a year ago, on account of their humane but indiscreet action in visiting and assisting the investigating commission. It was most natural, but most unfortunate. Every effort that is possible with me has already been exerted for their protection. Safe conduct was ordered on their request to go to Van, and then apparently declined.

There is now much reason to fear that they will be sacrificed. * * *

I have, etc.,

A. W. Terrell.

Sir Philip Currie to Mr. Terrell.

Dear Mr. Terrell: I have just received a telegram from our consul at Erzerum saying that a letter from Bitlis, dated November 27, states that, owing to Moslem hostility, the position of Americans is most critical. He adds, “I have spoken to Shakir Pasha, but action by the United States minister would be more effective.”

Yours, very truly,

Philip Currie.
