Mr. Olney to Mr. Terrell.

No. 679.]

Sir: Your No. 667, of the 11th instant, further explains the grounds upon which you had made renewed demands at the Porte and palace for the protection of American missionaries whose safety might appear to be threatened by the events in eastern Asia Minor or elsewhere, and I have pleasure in confirming the approbation heretofore given to your conduct in warning the Ottoman Government that if any American—man, woman, or child—were hurt, your Government would hold it responsible.

I am, etc.,

Richard Olney.
