Mr. Terrell to Mr. Olney.

[Telegram.]

Said Pasha, former foreign minister, reappointed. Consul of the United States at Beirut reports activity of revolutionary leaders in interior, and that missionaries dread being assassinated by revolutionists, who hope thus to bring odium on the Turks. They also fear massacre by the Turks. My demand for orders to all civil and military chiefs in all provinces for protection of Americans has been renewed. Still dread the effect of recent events here on remote provinces. * * * The Armenian churches have been filled for a week by Armenians who refuse to leave, whether from apprehension or because revolutionary leaders require it as an object lesson to influence Christian powers, opinions differ. Order seems restored, but all Armenian business houses are closed under instructions from Armenian committee.

Terrell.
