Sir: I have the honor to inclose herewith
translation of a note from the Porte, the long-delayed answer to my
request for an explanation in regard to the Tarsus affair.

The Sublime Forte to
the United States Legation.

In consequence of the verbal steps made by the legation of the United
States of America, the Imperial minister hastened to appeal by
telegraph to the governor-general of the vilayet of Adana with
regard to the assault of which Mr. Christie apparently was the
object at Tarsus.
It turns out from the reply of His Excellency Faïk Pasha that,
according to the investigations made on the spot, neither Mr.
Christie nor his house has been the object of any assault.
Everything was reduced to a mere quarrel between his cook and two of
his pupils with Ali Zeybek [Page 1284] and his companions. In consequence of these facts, these last
ones having been arrested and indicted, the examination is going
on.
The consul of the United States at the seat of the vilayet addressed
to the local authority a communication to thank it for the
satisfactory solution given to this matter, and Mr. Christie on his
side personally called on the governor-general in order to express
to him his thanks for the efforts shown on this occasion by the
Imperial authorities.
