Sir: I have received your No. 153, of the 9th ultimo, reporting that the attachment levied by Mr. Devot on the second installment of the indemnity due to Mr. Richard Allen had been raised and the amount paid over to your legation.
The Department is glad to learn that the matter was amicably arranged.
Your communication to the Haitian secretary of foreign affairs of the views of this Government in regard to the matter was, however, timely, and will doubtless tend to a better understanding of the subject in the future. You should, however, have sent a copy of your communication.
