Sir: In answer to a telegraphic dispatch from this Department, the United States minister at Madrid wires that the sensational articles in the Times and other New York papers, to which you referred at our interview of the other day, are perfectly understood in Madrid to be merely rumors, for which this Government is in no way responsible.

Awaiting information respecting the answer to your telegram to Madrid, of which you were good enough to apprise me, I take this opportunity, etc.
