Mr. Gresham to Sir Julian Pauncefote.

No. 86.]

Excellency: I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your note of the 20th ultimo, in which you state that Her Majesty’s Government agrees to pay one-third of the expense of the surveys of the Samoan land commission, aggregating, perhaps, $2,000, provided the Government of the United States concurs.

In reply, I have to inform you that this Government will assume one-third of that expense, and that the German ambassador here has been so advised in reply to his note upon the subject.

I have, etc.,

W. Q. Gresham.
