Mr. Gresham to Baron Gresham.
Department of State,
Washington, April 24, 1895.
No. 52.]Washington, April 24, 1895.
Excellency: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of February 26 last, stating that the cost of the surveys ordered by the Samoan land commission aggregates perhaps $1,500 or $2,000, and asking whether the Government of the United States is willing to pay its pro rata share.
In reply I have to inform you that this Government will bear its one-third share of the expenses indicated, and that I have so advised the British ambassador in reply to his recent note upon the subject.
Accept, etc.,
W. Q. Gresham.
