Baron Fava to Mr.
Olney.
[Personal.]
Embassy
of Italy,
Washington, October, 1895.
(Received October 18.)
My Dear Mr. Olney:
With reference to our last conversation, I have the honor to transmit
herewith to your excellency, accompanied by a summary, the statements
which have been forwarded to me by my Government relative to the family
situation of the five Italians lynched at Walsenburg, Colo., in March
last.
It results from the said statements, delivered by the municipal
authorities of the birthplaces of these individuals, that two of the
three Italians who have been killed were not married, but have left
numerous relatives, and one was married and has left a wife with three
children. Of the other two Italians who had their frozen feet amputated
at the hospital, one has a son, his wife being dead, and the other has a
wife and a daughter.
In submitting these official documents to your excellency’s examination,
I leave to your high and benevolent appreciation to suggest the amount
which may be deemed suitable to indemnify the families of the victims of
the Colorado mob, according to the spirit of justice which prompts all
your actions.
It will give me much pleasure to know at your earliest convenience your
excellency’s views on this subject.
With my best thanks in advance, believe me, etc.
