Mr. Egan to Mr. Blaine.

No. 220.]

Sir: On yesterday I called upon the President of the Junta de Gobierno, Señor Don Jorge Montt, to offer him my official and personal congratulations upon his unanimous nomination by both the Conservative [Page 227] and Liberal parties for the Presidency of the Republic. I had with him a most pleasing interview, in which he assured me of his most cordial appreciation of the courtesy which in the name of my Government and personally I had tendered to him, and he begged me to accept and convey to the Government of the United States his very warmest acknowledgments.

In view of the situation, I deemed it well to inform you by cable of this incident, which I did by telegram.

I have, etc.,

Patrick Egan.
