Sir: Your No. 166, of the 18th ultimo, has been received. You therein present the proposition of the Government of Turkey looking to the overhauling of the books of the American Bible Society at Constantinople, and the fixing of a seal upon such of them as may be found unobjectionable. You also inclose copies of the correspondence exchanged upon the subject.
The letter of the managers of the Bible House, Messrs. Dwight and Bliss, copy of which accompanies your dispatch, and of whom you sought advice concerning the matter, very clearly shows the objections to the proposal.
Your action thereon, in addressing the minister of foreign affairs a note declining to appoint a delegate for the purpose named, is approved.
