Sir: I have to acknowledge the receipt of your dispatch No. 1716, of the 30th ultimo, announcing the death of his excellency Iwakura Tomomi, junior prime minister of His Imperial Japanese Majesty’s cabinet, and giving an interesting account of the funeral obsequies as well as of his illustrious career.
Intelligence of Mr. Iwakura’s death has been received with profound regret, and, in the name of the Government and people of the United States, I desire that you will suitably convey an expression of their sincere sympathy and condolence with the Government and people of Japan for the loss which they have sustained in the death of so eminent a statesman.
