Sir: I have to acknowledge the receipt of your No. 33, giving particulars of the late disastrous earthquake on the island of Ischia.
The news of this calamity was very distressing to the President and to the people of the United States, and you will kindly profit by an early opportunity to make known to His Majesty’s Government the general deep sympathy with the relatives of those who perished in the catastrophe, which prevails throughout this country.
