No. 326.
Mr. Frelinghuysen to Mr. Daggett.

No. 14.]

Sir: Representations have recently been made to the Department to the effect that Chinese sugar is taken to the Hawaiian Islands and exported thence to the United States as the produce of those islands, [Page 546] for the purpose of securing the advantage of our reciprocity treaty with Hawaii of 1875.

You will, therefore, institute a thorough but discreet investigation into these charges, ascertaining if possible their truth or falsity, as the case may be, and reporting hither fully the result of your examination in the premises.

You will give the subject your immediate attention.

I am, &c.,

FRED’K T. FRELINGHUYSEN.
