Sir: Your dispatch No. 403, of the 12th instant, giving an account of the ceremonies which were observed on the occasion of the unveiling of the statue of La Fayette at Le Puy, on the 6th of the present month, has been, read with great interest.
Your action in accepting the invitation to be present at the ceremonies as the representative of this country is heartily approved by the President, and he is gratified to learn that the event called forth so many warm expressions of the good will of the people of France towards the Government and citizens of the United States.
